Dr. Carsten, DVM, PhD, CVA, CCRT is the Director of the Center for Integrative Veterinary Health Care. He has a broad education along with being a long time advocate for the integrative veterinary medicine approach. In addition to his DVM degree, Dr. Carsten holds an AAS degree in veterinary technology, a BS degree in microbiology, a MS in anatomy and neurobiology, and a PhD in cell and molecular biology. He is also a certified veterinary acupuncturist (CVA) and a certified canine rehabilitation therapist (CCRT).
These formal educational experiences combined with a range of practical work experiences including mixed animal medicine and surgery, small animal medicine and surgery, emergency medicine and surgery, university based surgical research, post-doctoral research, teaching, and nutritional supplement industry product developer and consultant gave Dr. Carsten a broad perspective on health care and expanded his ability to evaluate research results and develop practical clinical applications. His intense investigation into alternative and complimentary approaches started in 1988. This was stimulated by frustration with the limitations of conventional medicine. The culmination of his efforts resulted in his advocating an integrative approach. |

Integrative veterinary medicine is about the best and most appropriate application of a therapeutic modality or modalities. This includes a conventional evaluation to diagnosis and use therapies that promote optimal healing responses. Combining healing modalities is generally beneficial but care should be used to avoid interference. Frequently used modalities include conventional medicine and surgery, nutritional supplements, acupuncture, manual therapies like osteopathy and chiropractic, western and Chinese herbs, homeopathic medicines, and energetic modalities.
